Retro-Spect: {The 1920s}

The Great Gatsby opened in theaters this week and I thought, what great way to give a celebratory nod, than reminisce upon the fashion of this era as it inspires looks today and what it actually looked like in the 1920s.

Women's trends in this era consisted mostly of drop-waisted sheath-like dress with pleated or slitted skirts adorned with embellishments as well.  But this type of style actually resonated with the younger generation at the time as it was not as conservative comparably to the older women that came before them.  These dresses presented much more of a freedom for ladies to enjoy themselves at dances and parties.  Elsa Schiaparelli was a major designer in this period who focused on this type of silhouette comparing it to the stylings of the Greeks and Romans, inspired by tunics and the goddesses.

Popular actresses who fore fronted fashion trends in this decade consisted of Mary Pickford who starred in The Love Light and My Best GirlMarion Davies featured in Beauty's Worth and The Patsy and Louise Brooks as seen in Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl.

Even now fashion is still inspired by this bygone era, integrating the classic silhouette into modern day collections with throwback embellishments and swinging skirts.

Red Carpet Highlights: {Met Gala 2013}

The Met Gala was deemed with a punk inspired theme this year and there was an open door, for the most adventurous individuals, to try to incorporate this 90s trend into elegant red carpet wear.  These were some of my favorite looks, though not entirely on the deeper end of the punk theme spectrum, I fancied the classic looks with the tiniest tinge of edge comparably to the more out of the box ensembles.

Red Carpet Highlights: {Oscars 2013}

It seems as though the most breathtaking looks were in beautiful neutrals, in the most feminine silhouettes.  The most classic looks seemed to be much more the show stoppers of the carpet this year, compared to more extravagant and detailed ensembles.  The styling along with the gowns, paired fresh faces and simple hair looks that focused on how simplicity can truly emulate beauty in its rawest form.

Straight off the runway...

Red Carpet Highlights: {Golden Globes & Grammys 2013}

Some of my personal favorites...

Golden Globes

Emily Blunt in an ornate, gold brocade, side cutout body hugging gown.
She looks incredibly regal but still effortless.

As seen in the Michael Kors Resort 2013 collection.
Styled with a gold cuff on each wrist.

Jennifer Lawrence in a 50's-inspired, pinkish red gown, adorned with a waist highlighting belt.
The look is both classic and modern.

As seen in the Chrisitian Dior Couture Fall 2012 collection.
Styled with a complementary pairing of green eyeshadow and red lips.

Jessica Alba in a muted orange mermaid style dress with lip color to match the bright hue.
The color is perfect with her golden complexion and hair.

As seen in the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2013 collection.
Styled with an orange clutch and pumps to match.

Grammys

Adele in a flower detailed, red and black knee-length dress, paired with floral print pointed toe pumps.
Love seeing this woman in color!

As seen in the Valentino Couture Spring 2013 collection.
Styled simply with a middle part up-do.

Katy Perry in a mint green neckline embellished column gown.
According to her, it was definitely a 70's inspired look.

As seen in the Gucci Resort 2013 collection.
Styled similarly with a sleek middle part.

Still awaiting the Oscars that will soon be airing, can't wait for the fashion that will be arriving on the red carpet for that award show!

Red Carpet Highlights: {The Emmy's 2012}

Here are just a few of my favorite looks from the carpet this year.  I love the play with color, texture and the feminine silhouette.  I also like seeing the mirror image of the celebrity in the gown that was formally just on the runway, seeing exactly how it came to be styled.

Off the Runway: {Velvet}

Velvet is such a rich fabric in texture and as I see it appear every year around this time, it reminds me that the weather is slowly but surely changing into cooler temperatures.  While entering into the fall season, the pairing of this soft fabric with the rich jewel tones and neutral stand-bys adds a sense of elegance and wearability, showing that it's a reoccurring addition of seasonal transition into the colder months.

Off the Runway: {Burgundy}

A deep red is the "it" color for the Fall 2012 Ready-To-Wear fashion season.  The depth and the richness of the color is easily complimented by any neutral.
